A Brief History of Handmaids Infant Jesus Nursery/Primary School Awka
Handmaids Infant Jesus Nursery/Primary School Awka was established by the Handmaid of the Holy Child Jesus Congregation. The school started on the January 7, 1985 with 32 pupils and two teachers. Sr. Emmanuel Onyekwelu HHCJ, was the pioneer headmistress. In 1988, Sr. Onyekwelu was succeeded by Sr. Catherine Ikwueke HHCJ. In 1990, Sr. Anne Obiora HHCJ, took over as headmistress and served in this capacity till 1994 when she was replaced by Sr. Joanne Okereke HHCJ. Sr. Philomena Madu, HHCJ took over from Sr. Okereke in 1996 and served the school till 2009 when Sr. Rosemary Edom HHCJ took over.
Handmaids Infant Jesus Nursery/Primary School Awka gained State approval in 1988 and since inception has recorded continuous growth and expansion. The population of pupils has grown to 1,500 and the staff strength stands at 43 teaching staff and 22 non-academic staff. The school has also acquired different departments such as Music, Department of creative arts; computer department, Home Economics and Foreign Languages (French). All these are geared towards the integral development of the pupils.
As a mature tree bearing sweet and fragrant fruits, Handmaids Infant Jesus Nursery/Primary School Awka has developed branches. In 1995, it gave birth to Handmaids Infant Jesus Nursery School, Okpuno, now a big school with the name changed to Angel Gabriel Nursery/Primary School Nodu Okpuno (formerly Akpaenyi Memorial Nursery/Primary School). Also on October 8, 2007, it gave birth to another offspring, Handmaid Girls Secondary School Amansea.
Handmaids Infant Jesus Nursery/Primary School Awka is a school to reckon with in all aspects of school life and activity in Anambra State and in Nigeria on the one hand, and in Awka Diocese and in the Church in Nigeria. Her pupils have consistently participated in quizzes and other competitions both at the state and national levels and at the diocesan and ecclesiastical provincial and interdiocesan levels. She has won many trophies and plaques. Indeed, Handmaids Infant Jesus Nursery/Primary is a force to reckon with in all areas of school life and activity in Awka, Anambra State and in Nigeria. Among the other schools, at least in Anambra State, the ‘fear’ of Handmaids Infant Jesus Nursery/Primary School Awka, is the beginning of wisdom.
